On the backs of books generally lie a short description of the story; If you cannot be patient enough for the plot line thread, read this:
The world is physical, but wasn't always, because a long time ago, during the mythological golden age, demons began rising in power and threatened the very existence of the light of wisdom.
"Today" we face a repeat of ancient mythological history, as the ancient gates -used to seal, and separate the world from the astral/spiritual world, ultimately segregating us from the demons- are weakened and even broken, allowing the demons to, slowly but surely, invade.
Over the course of the story, a large range of events take place, covering a wide many cultures, creatures, beliefs, and worlds, and involving many mythologies, wars, magic, and obscure alliances with a large assortment of mythological creatures and figures such as Odin and Baal to reassert the proper evolution of reality itself.
